In Mette’s family there is a chest of drawers that is passed down through the generations. It is the family’s memory depot, where big and small things are left behind to be investigated by future generations. This means pure bliss for a ‘stuff maker’ like Mette.

The majority of Mette’s projects are about memory. How we remember and how objects leave traces. Value is not about the amount of gold used, but the memory of a person or an experience. Mette connects our personal memories to objects. Memories take physical form when materialised as jewellery.

Time’ is made out of a clock hand that was left behind in the family chest of drawers. A trip to Bruun Rasmussen uncovered the clock hand’s history – Northern Europe, mid-eighteenth century. There were many small workshops at the time, so it is difficult to be more accurate than that. The pattern is typical of the era. It is not incredibly fine, probably more upper working class in its origin.

The clock hand’s decoration has been split up and then put together again. In the best possible post-modern style. The individual pieces have been converted into earrings, bracelets and chains, which seem both recognisable and logical. The result is a sophisticated jewellery collection with a touch of nostalgia.
